Spain is the second European producer of rice, with 28% of the total, behind Italy. Production is around 750,000 tonnes, while consumption is 247,000 tonnes - about 5.8 kilos per person per year.
Total production in Europe is 2.6 million tonnes, far from China's 180 million, India's 130 million or Indonesia's 54 million.
The cultivation of rice in Spain is very concentrated, among five communities 97% of the total is distributed. Andalusia is the community that produces the most with 40% of the total, followed by Extremadura, with 23%, Comunidad Valenciana, with 15.5%, Catalonia with 15%, and Aragon -5.75% .
